TDRA type approval

TDRA type approval is the UAE registration required before any telecom device, GPS trackers included, can be used, sold or distributed in the country.

TDRA type approval is the registration required before telecommunications equipment can be used, sold or distributed in the UAE, administered by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (tdra.gov.ae type approval page, checked August 2026). A GPS tracker is a radio-frequency telecom device, so every OBU sold in the UAE needs it, regardless of which mandate, SecurePath in Dubai or Asateel in Abu Dhabi, the device will later serve.

What are the rules for GPS trackers?

The governing policy is the Telecommunications Equipment Type Approval Regime, Version 3.0, published by the TDRA. Compliance houses report that GPS trackers fall under the medium-risk Scheme 2, may require technical testing, and receive approval valid for three years, administered only through TDRA-registered suppliers and dealers (compliance-house-reported; the scheme classification is not spelled out on the TDRA’s public page).

For a fleet buyer the practical rule is simple: tracker vendors treat the approval as the gate to the market, since an unapproved unit cannot legally be imported, sold or activated in the UAE (vendor-reported). Ask a supplier for the device’s TDRA approval before signing, in the same breath as its SIRA or ITC listing.

Fleetric sells no hardware and holds no type approvals by design; it reads the feed from whatever approved device the fleet already runs.
