How to calculate the true cost per km for a tipper in the UAE

The true cost per km of a UAE tipper is the sum of fuel, driver salary, insurance, depreciation and maintenance, divided by the kilometres it actually runs, laden and empty. For most tippers that lands between AED 2.5 and AED 4.0 per km. If you only count fuel, you understate the real number by more than half.

Why “cost per km” is the number that decides the bid

A tipper earns by the trip, but it spends by the kilometre and the hour. When you quote a job on instinct, you are guessing at a number you could measure. Across a year, a fleet that prices 10% under its true cost per km on a single recurring route can quietly erase the profit of its three best trucks.

The five cost components

A fully-allocated cost per km has five parts:

• Fuel: the only cost most operators track. Blend the mandated GPS feed with fuel-card CSVs to get litres per 100 km per truck.
• Driver: salary, accommodation and visa, divided by working kilometres.
• Insurance: annual premium per vehicle, divided by annual kilometres.
• Depreciation: purchase price minus residual, over expected life.
• Maintenance: tyres, servicing and repairs; tyres alone can add AED 0.3–0.5/km on aggregate routes.

Industry guidance for heavy commercial vehicles consistently puts fuel at roughly a third of total running cost, which means the two-thirds most operators ignore is where the real margin decision sits.

Laden vs empty kilometres

The trap is dividing total cost by laden kilometres only. A tipper that returns empty on 40% of its distance is carrying cost on every one of those empty kilometres. Allocate across all kilometres, then track the empty-running share per route: it is one of the fastest margins to recover.
